Overseas trained doctor initiatives under Strengthening Medicare
More overseas-trained doctors are joining the Australian medical workforce in places where they are most needed, partly as a result of Australian Government efforts to attract appropriately qualified doctors.These measures were introduced in November 2003, through the Australian Government’s Strengthening Medicare package. They include:
- international medical recruitment strategies
- helping doctors to stay longer, or obtain permanent residency, through changes to immigration arrangements
- improved training and additional support
- less ‘red tape’ in approval processes, and
- help for employers to arrange placements of overseas-trained doctors.
Overseas-trained doctor initiatives - the benefits
These measures have brought significant benefits to the Australian community.- As at February 2007, as a result of Government recruitment activity, 430 overseas-trained doctors had started work in designated areas across Australia.
- In addition, another 118 overseas-trained doctors had signed employment contracts and were soon to begin work in Australia.
- As at February 2007, more than 2,770 temporary resident doctors had been granted a visa for more than two years after their visa validity period was extended from two to four years.
